v 2 1 0 O ct 1 99 6 PROBING THE GRAVITATIONAL GEON
نویسنده
چکیده
The Brill–Hartle gravitational geon construct as a spherical shell of small amplitude, high frequency gravitational waves is reviewed and critically analyzed. The Regge–Wheeler formalism is used to represent gravitational wave perturbations of the spherical background as a superposition of tensor spherical harmonics and an attempt is made to build a non–singular solution to meet the requirements of a gravitational geon. High–frequency waves are seen to be a necessary condition for the geon and the field equations are decomposed accordingly. It is shown that this leads to the impossibility of forming a spherical gravitational geon. The attempted constructs of gravitational and electromagnetic geons are contrasted. The spherical shell in the proposed Brill–Hartle geon does not meet the regularity conditions required for a non–singular source and hence cannot be regarded as an adequate geon construct. Since it is the high frequency attribute which is the essential cause of the geon non–viability, it is argued that a geon with less symmetry is an unlikely prospect. The broader implications of the result are discussed with particular reference to the problem of gravitational energy. To appear in Int. J. Mod. Phys. D

We study the lensing of neutrinos by astrophysical objects. At the difference of photons, neutrinos can cross a stellar core; as a result the lens quality improves. While Uranians alone would benefit from this effect in the Sun, similar effects could be considered for binary systems. Chercheur I. I. S. N. Directeur de recherches du F. N. R. S.

We explore a broad class of three-parameter inflationary models, called the Λ-inflation, and its observational predictions: high abundance of cosmic gravitational waves consistent with the Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum of pri-mordial cosmological perturbations, the non-power-law wing-like spectrum of matter density perturbations, high efficiency of these models to meet current observational test...

We present two weak lensing reconstructions of the nearby (zcl = 0.055) merging cluster Abell 3667, based on observations taken ∼ 1 year apart under different seeing conditions. This is the lowest redshift cluster with a weak lensing mass reconstruction to date. The reproducibility of features in the two mass maps demonstrate that weak lensing studies of low-redshift clusters are feasible. Thes...
